Business 101 When to ask for help

Years ago, I knew I needed help when I said to Chad- I have GOT to have better pictures! I need a photographer!

Well, that dialog has developed into: " I have GOT to get someone to help me do Facebook. I need help with Twitter! I need someone to just sit and PIN my business! I need someone to answer emails! I need someone to edit all my bad spelling, and clean up my Etsy shop! I NEED HELP- I JUST CAN'T DO IT ALL! And if you are on the computer you aren't working, which means you have clients that don't have their packages yet, and if you're working, your not answering those emails or corresponding with your clients online. Such a headache don't you agree?

I finally got someone to help me, actually several people. I am fabulous at building hairpieces and decorating your hair, however, I really stink at doing everything else, and frankly I don't have time. So I hired a virtual assistant to help me run my Facebook, and she also helps with my Twittering. Then I hired 2 amazing graphic artists to help me with designing adds and banners, the other girl is redesigning my blog. I also have another great girl cleaning up my spelling in my Etsy shop, email marketing, pinning my products, and soon to be a guest contributor on my blog.

There really is so much to do, and you can't do it by yourself. I am so blessed to have an amazing team of girls who LOve my product as much as I do, and believe in my company. They also tell me the brutal truth when I need it.

Is it time to gather up a team to help? Are you going crazy doing this all by yourself?

You can start with the people around you. Take a minute to think about this next thing I'm going to tell you- do you have a client that is so crazy about your product that she's a returning customer on a weekly basis? Do you have a Fb follower that always posts on your page saying how great you are? Do you notice the fans who are first to say goodmorning?

There are your employees! There is your pool of potential team members! Don't just sell to them, HIRE them!

Can't afford to? These girls love your product and YOU so much they'd probably love to do a trade with you.

As you gather a team of enthusiatic friends who believe in you and your product, the work load becomes lighter, and who knows- you may even smile a litte bit more. Plus who wants to work alone anyways?

Business 101- What to do when sales are down?

I Loooooved this article when I saw it and wanted to share it with all of you! How many times have we said- "my sales are down- what can I do?" Now I don't feel helpless anymore, and I also feel I have more control over what I used to think I 'didn't ' have control over. I cut out the first 2 which didn't apply to me being a small business, but you can refer to the complete document at: about.com

1. Give your customers the inside scoop.

Recently I was shopping at a retail housewares store. I had picked out an item and was mulling over whether to buy it or not when a salesperson came up to me and said, “I see you’re interested in that blender. We’re having a sale next week and all our blenders will be 20 percent off. You might want to come back then.” Guess what? I did – and bought two other items as well. Lesson: if you have a promotion or sale coming up, tell your customers about it. They’ll come back – and probably bring some friends with them too. (And don't forget - you can give your customers the inside scoop by emailing or calling them, too.)

2. Tier your customers.

There should be a clear and obvious difference between regular customers and other customers – a difference that your regular customers perceive as showing that you value them. How can you expect customer loyalty if all customers are treated as “someone off the street”? There are all kinds of ways that you can show your regular customers that you value them, from small things such as greeting them by name through larger benefits such as giving regulars extended credit or discounts.

3. Set up a customer rewards program.

We’re all familiar with the customer rewards programs that so many large businesses have in place. But there’s no reason that a small business can’t have a customer rewards program, too. It can be as simple as a discount on a customer’s birthday or as complex as a points system that earns various rewards such as discounts on merchandise. Done right, rewards programs can really help build customer loyalty and increase sales.

4. Distribute free samples to customers.

Why do so many businesses include free samples of other products when you buy something from them? Because it can increase sales in so many ways. As the customer who bought the original product, I might try and like the sample of the new product and buy some of it, too. Or I might pass on the sample to someone else, who might try the product, like it, and buy that and other products from the company. At the very least, the original customer will be thinking warm thoughts about your company, and hopefully telling other people about your products.

Attracting new customers is a good thing. But attracting new customers is not the only way to increase your sales, and is, in fact, the hard way of going about it. Shifting your sales focus to enticing your current customers can make increasing your sales easier – and best of all, build the customer loyalty that results in repeat sales.

I thought these ideas were attainable and do-able. Within 1 week of using these tools, I had great customer feedback,

and my sales have gone up. I have also added a free gift in my packages and have had a great response from my clients such

Business 101- Planning

Every Monday, right here, just you and I can sit down together and talk business. I've been running Miss Ruby Sue for almost 4 years, and though I don't know everything, nor ever will, I think I've gotten better thru trial and error, asking questions, watching others, and observing successful habits of other businesses. I usually cringe when someone tries to give ME advice because my business of making headbands - producing a product, shipping it, promoting it, inventory, social media- all of that is so different and there is no cookie cutter business mold for you or me. But a few things can still apply.

Planning. Plan to be successful with your business, and your time. Last year I planned to reach 10,000 FB followers in 2011. By Christmas I had 6K, so I didn't quite make it. However, I am still aiming for high numbers, and giving it my best. Work on growing your FB numbers, getting more followers on your blog, and yet somehow not go crazy at the same time, will help your sales grow slowly but surely. Organize your time so you can do your FB, Twitter or your blog when the kids are asleep. Plan on being busy!

Another thing you can try is to make a vision board for yourself and don't be afraid to post the things that YOU want! When you see your goals up on the wall day after day, it gives you a silent path that you are quietly following.

Oh boy are you going to Looooove this wedding! I was asked to make several hairpieces for Sarah Groundwater, and soon discovered this isn't your ordinary girl. Planning and working with Sarah was so much fun for me as I grouped her colors, and started building her pieces. The colors actually did all the talking and I listened- which made making them so much fun, and after making about 25 pieces, I still hadn't run out of ideas! It was a real treat to see all the photos finished, and I want to thank Sarah for allowing me to be apart of her beautiful Tuscan wedding!

How to find success with your Business Idea

I have to chuckle whenever someone asks me this. In fact I've been dragging my feet writing this because I am definitely more creative than I am "Business Savy"- whatever your definition of that means.
Today finding success isn't just what you do with your hands and fabric, or paint, or wood, or yarn, it's how well you can use the Internet as well as your Craft, such as Social Media- FB, Twitter, Blog, and now Pinterest to name a few.
Just to prove my idea with some of my own real statistics, and I mean REAL here, (just so you can see it ain't all roses here) I am sharing this information with you to show you the power of the Internet and how it's going to affect your business sales, (and your happiness as well). Again, I am not an expert, but learned the old fashioned way of trial and error, which means a LOT of you will relate with me on this!

Not bad for ZERO FB or other social media outlets- just lots of ETSY Treasuries, Popular Blogges and being featured on Good Morning America, and The View. (I was featured because I was a stay at home mom, making a few bucks with an online store on Etsy. I fit the story they were looking for)
But then after awhile, your fame is long forgotten, and your sales drop.

Isn't that crazy??? CRAZZZZYYY!

Starting a business with little resources is like playing baseball with only you covering the whole field. You are the pitcher, the catcher, the first base, the runner and the umpire. Your store will start to grow, although at a snail-pace. Be prepared to face a lot of challenges, and patience and a lot of hard work will be your best allies.

Most start-up entrepreneurs even find that they need to shift to a simpler lifestyle as all their resources are channeled into the business. Even your time for leisure will be dramatically cut. Be careful in protecting the trust and support that you have earned along the way.
Total devotion to your business, honesty and sincerity to the people that you deal with, will take you to higher levels and allow you to branch out in a matter of time. There will be a lot temptations and pitfalls that you need to be prepared for. Starting a business is a complicated process.

So lets recap with the Microscope:
1. Start. .Quit thinking about it and just do it. Set up your Etsy shop, or whatever place you decide.
2. Get your FB page started. Start Twittering, Pinterest, Instagram, your blog. TODAY.Invite your friends, neighbors and family members to your store with all the social media you can handle.
3. Make sure you are the BEST at what you do. Prove it with pictures.
4. Be passionate about your work, and share your joy thru your tweets, your FB, etc.
5. Repeat every day!

Hello and Happy New Year Lovies! Have you set your goals for 2012 yet? I will be doing mine later today, and thinking and reflecting on what I'd like to accomplish for the fresh year ahead. 2011 was just an amazing year for Miss Ruby Sue; in 11 months we went from around 100 FB followers to over 6,000. We went from 135 orders in 2010 to 690 in 2011. Wow! I don't know if Thank You is the right word here- but I am just BLOWN AWAY at your generosity and kindness and especially your SUPPORT as we go into the new year. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
For the last 2 months I've been working on some new ideas and sprucing up the shop a little bit, and thought I might share a few things that are coming to fruition and which you'll be seeing really soon.

I'm so excited to be introducing these fun, simple and colorful creations- and I hope that you love them too. Over the last 3 years I've really wanted to get back to my 'roots' and create smaller pieces that show their greatness with an intense color palette and simple design. AFter doing such large and over the top creations,, I feel a little refreshed by working on smaller details- things that color your life everyday. I hope you are going to love them as much as I do!
Last but not least, a new blog look is in order, Thanks to my friend Kassie, and when you open your packages you're in for a big suprise as well!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with your families! I enjoyed getting up at 7, and seeing my little 6 year old so excited for opening gifts. If it weren't for Kylers excitment, it'd be really quiet around our house. My 3 teens piled up on the couch and sorted their gifts, finally showing their enthusiasm! "How do those darn Gift Certificates work?" You wouldn't believe how many times I get asked that, so I decided to FINALLY post your answers here on my blog, and I hope this helps anyone who is trying to encorporate GC into their shops.

Sue writes: "I'd like to pick your brain as a fellow Etsian. I want to start offering shoppers gift certificates but can't figure out the instructions I should give to the gift certificate recipients on how to redeem the certificate. Would you mind sharing the instructions you provide? I'd really really appreciate it!"

Well Sue, to make it brief and to the point, I set a dollar amount in different increments of 25, 50 and 100.00
The gift giver purchases the item and I agree to email the GC in the form of an email, or, I can print the GC and send it in the mail to the recipient, with a special code- either a number or a word so I know it's legit. Then the recipient contacts me by email and lets me know what item they'd like.

These are the instructions at my shop--
These gift certificates are great as last minute gifts! They are e-mailed to you or the recipient
so you don't have to depend on the post office for delivery! If you prefer, an actuall card can be mailed to the lucky recipient. Just let me know the recievers address, etc in note to seller.
These certificates are redeemable towards any item in our shop including shipping and can even be applied to custom orders. If the purchase is less than the amount purchased any remaining balance will be logged as a credit and can be applied toward future purchases.

Goodmorning to all my wonderful clients and friends! Today, if you don't know it is October 24. And 3 years ago today, I opened up an Etsy account under Miss Ruby Sue. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had a drive to make something work. I started it without my husbands support, depressed and a total mess emotionally. Work for my husband which was so successful years previously was literally dying right before our eyes. *2006-07* I started with a cute little headband, purses, and a few bags. And then I started to realize what it was I really liked after doing a million necklaces. I loved headbands. I really do. And from there, my story has a happy inbetween- oh this isn't over yet. NOt even.

Fashion in Full Color

Now that Summer is gone (sniff sniff) and Fall is here, that means you're pulling out pants from the back of the closet, and trying to figure out what fits and what doesn't. ( Don't tell me I'm the only one)And I think dressing each morning should be fun. Yes. Really.

And how do you make dressing each day fun? COLOR! Color on your pants, your shirts, shoes and especially your belts.

I start with the pants first.

If I had to wear regular blue jeans every single day I'd cry. So borring! So Spice it up!

Some of my ABSOLUTE fav's for fall, winter, spring and summer are these gorgeous Vintage Matchstick Cord beauties from J.CREW availble in 11 different colors! Hows that for color? I ordered the Vibrant Flame and Grafiti Green-and don't believe the old Wive's Tales about Cordoroys making you look fat. These are so soft and thin and add wonderful texture to your outfits.

One of the things I really like to do, even before I saw it featured on JCREW models was tucking my shirt right at the top of my pants- or where your belt buckle is. It's like a slouchy, "I know I look good and I don't care" attitude. I found that instead of people looking at my fabulous breasts, the eye is directed to the belt. (Another reason to wear a brite, off the wall belt. I know, right?) So if you have big boobs, tuck in your shirt- just in the front, and watch people divert their eyes to your belt instead. Or maybe you don't mind that. But Seriously try it. And don't you dare match it either. Or I will jump out of my computer and grab you!

Then yesterday I found these little beauties at JoesJeans. I gasped and went strait to the internet to find my favorite most favorite color--I call it 80''s flourescent yellow--

I'll take one of each of the Fabulous The 55 Colors . Just get you one great pair and alternate between your Jcrews and blue jeans.

I'm also really loving blouses. That word sounds soo old, and I hate eating crow, but now I'm wearing these light fluffy see-thru pieces.

Now I really want to stress this point I'm about to make. Don't worry about what other people think.You're probably wrong anyway. If this is the first time you've made a deliberate attempt to be colorful you will be a little self- concious. But that will go away with the compliments that follow you around all day long.

. So wear some color, walk away from the mirror, and absorb the happy hormones that color gives you.

Business 101- better clients

I recently had a friend ask me: "I'm getting feedback that my items are now "too expensive", even though the quality is better than it used to be. I know I probably won't "convince" them that the quality is worth it, so where do I find the fans that DO want higher quality?"

That brought me back to when I first opened my shop Miss Ruby Sue in 2008 when everything was so new to me, and the thought of pricing all these hairpieces had me really nervous. I had some homework to do! Questions like " What is the going rate for something that looks like this? Is this a fair price? If I price it too high, people won't by it, and if it's too low, will they think my work is too cheap?"
A great place to start it to Read Etsy's ART OF PRICING series. That really helped me understand how to do it from the Dollars point of view, but what about MY point of view?

Since you're here, I'll tell you my point of view.
I didn't know what the heck I was doing back then. But I learned something about the stuff I made. When I introduced my Bib Necklaces, I charged 35.00 dollars per necklace because heck- they looked wierd and I wasn't sure if anybody would like them. I sold one, and another, and another, and ANOTHER, but they took forever to make with all the beading, details, etc. and I HATED making them. Guess what I did? I upped the price. I upped it 4 times until I felt they were worth my time to make. ( $99.00 if you wanted to know.) Now I EnJoy making them because I could make it worth my time. And I was being payed what I felt my time was worth. Now please understand that the demand was there-- if there was NO demand, the price would have stayed right there. But I was selling several a day and was able to still get what I wanted.

Now back to the question about " where do I find the fans that DO want higher quality?"
Before you jump to that, Ask yourself these simple questions.
* Do I offer something unique to the market?
In other words, Is what I'm selling, what everyone else is selling?
does it look just like my competitors?
* Is my work my very own?
Do I use someone elses work to base my own work off of?

* Do I enjoy working? is it worth my time?

* Will I be focusing on little sales, or bigger ones? My mentor Sherry, from BABYPOP taught me this and I've NEVEr forgotten that simple little advice that brought bigger $$$ to the studio, because I chose to go bigger and be different.

* If you offer something unique to the market, you can charge for that. Future clients are looking for something that is different and catches their eye- they want to buy something that they have never seen before. Why make something they can do themselves?????
I can't stress this enough- Why spend money on something that everybody else has?

*If your work is your own, charge accordingly. If it's copied, you aren't worth it. But if someone inspires you to add a little something different, or try a new skill and apply it to your work, then charge accordingly.Don't copy, it makes you fat simply because you aren't using your brain, or your hands, or your legs.

*Do You enjoy making your work, or is it a pain in the butt? Maybe you are not charging enough? Maybe you should reread the story above.

So a little review:

Name your price and stick to your guns.
Don't lower them except for a sale.
Get better pictures to make yourself look worth every penny.
If you stick to your guns, you will sift thru the cheap clients, and attract the ones who will pay.
Stretch yourself as an artist and create beauty and THEY will come.

MRS Monday Q&A: How do I negotiate with Photography shops?

Each Monday watch for a new Q&A.

Our first question today is from "A" who writes: "Photography: This is something I've been wanting to branch out and do with my shop's items, but I don't know how to get started, and have very minimal funds, so I couldn't pay a photography to always come in and shoot my items on models. I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on how to best negotiate with Photography shops, where I could get professional photos of our items, and not have to spend a fortune. Do you trade your item for free photos, or give discounts to the Photographers on your items?"

Great question "A" ! I think most business owners learn to appreciate great photography when they decide to launch a new product for the first time - especially- if they suck at it capturing it on photoshop. You might be great behind a sewing machine but really stink behind the camera. You know that old clichei- "A picture is worth a thousand words"?, well in our case a picture is worth a thousand dollars, or 10,000 dollars, depending on how well it can sell your product.

Taking my own pictures worked from 2008-2009. It even got me to THe View and GOOD MORNING AMERICA, but it didn't sustain sales. Soon I became a little dissatisfied with my store- it just didn't look good. I started to look around at other shops: I began to feel a little anxious because my competitors had WAAAAAAY better pictures than I did, and that made me really mad and frustrated because I had done all I could with my Canon Rebel and Picasa 3 and to be honest I was scared to even try Photoshop.

I am a full time mom, trying to run a business and NO time to take a class and try to do it myself. I needed more to stay ahead and really prove with my pictures that I was better than my competitors- that I was the BEST! I really understood now that a photographer would be my next best friend. And that's exactly where my real adventure begins.

In 2009 -10 I recieved emails from local photographers Cassie from PinkPaisleyPhoto and Tasha at Reflections asking to purchase hairpieces. I sold them at a discount, but after posting the pictures on Etsy and making better sales, I felt that a trade would be better for both of us. The pictures were brighter, the camera was better, dang! Why didn't I think of this sooner? But that's not the end of the story there. It gets better!

Then I discovered FB in 2011. I'll be the first to say I was really late with FB, but what the heck. I soon discovered so many wonderfully talented Photographers that I couldn't control myself and I asked if they'd like to trade photos for product. Straight across. No dollar for dollar or paperwork. I send products, you send me pictures. They keep the product and I use the pictures in my store, online, etc.
And they all said YES!

I'll admit it was a little crazy trying to run a business and send new designs to photographers week after week, but soon enough, little by little, the appearnce and appeal of my shop improved, my sales improved and I began to make friends with wonderful photographers. (See, they become your best friends! I told you)

Now lets break this down under my neon pink MRS microscope so that we understand each other:

1. Get on FB, or blogs, or Twitter, or WHATEVER , and find out WHO took that amazing shot. Find them. Follow them. Make comments on their walls, their blogs, and make yourself be know. Don't be a stranger.

2.. Do they have a lot of followers? If they do, SCORE! When they post your pics on their wall, you gain not only great pictures, but an entire new audience- THEIR audience!

3. ASk them if they'd like to do products for picture trades. It should NOT cost you do trades. If they cost, find someone else. Because that's not a trade is it?

4 Ask what their turnaround time is. You might have pictures in 3 days, or 3 months. Are you willing to wait?

5. Send them new designs. Something fresh.

6. Let the photographer work their magic. Don't tell your photographer what to do. Trust them.

7. Be patient while waiting for photos. Don't bug him/her. They won't like you.

8. When you recieve your pictures, post on your walls, or twitter, or what have you. Thank them. Over and Over!

9. Didn't like their work? No problem! Send the identical piece to the photographer who sells the best in your shop.

10. Keep a file of all your photographers addresses, and the dates of when you promised to send your products. I haven't always been so good at this, but eventually I did get everyone on my list. And what's really nice is now they email me for products for their upcoming photoshoots. And that's when the fruit of your labors really pays off - you've built trust and established a relationship with a great photographer where you BOTH win. I am now sending products on a weekly basis, so this will keep you reallllly busy.

Got it? Now go for it!

I think this was the HIGHLIGHT of my Miss Ruby Sue party April 9- a beautiful custom cake made just for me! Just for me! I asked for it to be made out of styrofoam because who can eat a gorgeous cake like that? ashley made sure all the colors were right, and was very detailed and asked lots of questions- so I knew she was good. And I loved the top hat!
And.......3 seconds after she left, Kyler put his finger in it. He wanted to taste it, and found it was hard inside. complete bummer, but to be expected from Kyler.
But, I'm happy to report that this year looks to be very brite for Miss Ruby Sue.

As my sales reached 900, I thought to myself- I should celebrate 1000 sales, but that won't be for quite some time....
1 month later, I reached it. And it is all because of you, my wonderful and fun friends and clients who have purchased hairpieces from Miss Ruby Sue. You are the life and excitement of my little company. How can I thank you enough for supporting me?
April 9th, from 2-4 at my house, I'll be having a carnival themed party with a photo-booth, cotton candy, food, cupcakes, treats, and a big hug from me when you step thru the door- and how I wish you could all make it! I really do. No, you don't have to purchase anything- it's just my way of saying thank you for making my dream possible.
I am not really a party person, so despite that slight default of character, I enlisted a party planner, AND an amazing photographer to take shots of everyone who comes over to share a special moment with me.

Here comes the bride

I love weddings, and I love custom weddings especially. It means a great deal to me when I have a young girl come to me, completely trusting me to make her gorgeous on the most important day of her life. It involves a lot of trust, and I take it very seriously.
This custom order was for a Miss Ruby Sue fan, who loved ivory, red and turqouise. I created this look by taking one of my very favorite vintage shirts and cutting flowers, then tricot to offset the texture of the fraying cotton, then miraculously as I was digging thru my red box ( my organizers are color coded) I came upon these beautiful vintage beaded poinsettas that are circa 1930's, and blue/white beaded leaves circa 1940's. What an amazing piece this turned out to be- truely one of a kind, just like every bride.
That's why Miss Ruby Sue weddings are so unique- you'll never, EVER see another girl wearing your piece. And they can be handed down to their own daughter. I just love that idea.

Well, I'd have to say anyone who wears Miss Ruby Sue is going to be rather stealing the show.

This piece was designed for a little 2 year old. Yup. A little girl who loves to dress up, And I couldn't wait to start this piece. As soon as the fabulous cameo cabachons arrived to make the final touches, I had Kyler model them for me. He absolutely hates doing it, but a little candy goes a LOOOOONG way with my little man.

Last week, February 24, 2001 to be exact, I launched my first line of doggie accessories at Miss Ruby Sue . It may not mean much to the average person, (although I hope it does make you want one for your little pup).
For 2 years, I day dreamed about a line of doggon cute accessories for doggies. I had a picture in my studio of a little dog with flowers on her color, ripped out of The Knot Magazine, and I knew I could do it so much better. Then I got busy with so many other things, and the idea got pushed into the dark cobwebs of my brain. Then in January, I was approached by the lovely Ria to photograph my work. When I visited her website, and seeing her beautiful work on children, and dogs, I knew it was the right time.
Believe me, I did my homework; I googled dog hairpieces, did Etsy searches, perused thru popular doggie shops, and couldn't find a darn thing, ( which is very good for me) and that's what convinced Miss Ruby Sue to make her move. I hope you all love them, and pass this along to your animal loving friends. Heck, they'd even look good on cats....or kids.....

Stop, drop and Hold

Kyler, my 5 year old, is a huge part of my day. 5 years old, everyone else is in Kindergarten except him. Which leaves us together all day long. I'm too lazy to put him in preschool (I'll just be open here)
We started this day out like any other kid...,

3 pieces of soft white bread, peanut butter, mini chocolate kisses, and halloween sprinkles. The other day,when I was feeling especially crazy and going out of my mind, little guy really wanted to help me sort the new feathers that arrived and we made a game out of it. It's called "match -the- feathers -to - the- bin" . That was actually kind of fun!

Sometimes just taking a pause from work is refreshing.
Afterwards, we made cookies, read a book, and then play-time with the neighbor.

And being the only one home,Kyler just happens to be my unfortunate model when I need a head. I bribed him to hold still.
Not bad!

Miss Ruby Sue Party

My 14 year old baby girl {she's still my baby girl} has been begging for 3 years to put highlights in her hair and I kept telling her heck no! girl because I can barely afford MYSELF and to start Maddie AND Rilee when pre-teens, there was just no way.

But I got this hairbrained idea to just do it myself and save a few bucks. And it's her 14th birthday.
I was like, 'what the heck' just do it. And She liked it.
And that big ball? It's a cheese ball. I know. That's what she wanted for dinner. Funny.

Then I taught her friends Sid and Allisa how to thread a needle, make a handmade ruffle, wrap a band and use THE HOLY GLUE GUN. { choir sings }

And of course we painted fingernails, and had cupcakes from COCOA BEAN. That's a whole 'nother blog entry. {I"ll save it for later}

In the meantime, Teenage girls are STILL Fun. And I can't believe it but I don't even REMEMBER being 14.

I am a compulsive spender. So while I was under the influence of VISA I splurged. I mean SPLURGED and bought a lot of this fun playful stuff. I don't know what you call it. Stuff on a stick. I found it at Little Retreats
And Rilee and I had such a blast making faces. If you think that's easy, THINK AGAIN. It's tough for stiffs like me to try to contort their faces and really get INTO the moment. (I'd make a crappy model. I can give you one look. That's it)

So anyway, this stuff is great for parties. Just make sure anyone 10 and younger doesn't slobber on them or chew the cardstock. That would look really funny.

M y B F F's and Birthdays

Over the river and thru the woods, to grandmother's house, we went. With Kimball, Rilee and Kyler loaded in 'the wagon' we cheerfully (Not really. Grouchy teenagers make big party pooopers) traveled the 3 miles to the Birthday Girls Bash.

My mom is the coolest little thing. Can you believe, we are only 20 years apart? That is so, like-- we could be friends with each other. It's not that far apart. I discovered she likes clothes and accessories. (as much as I do. We should never, EVVVVVer be allowed to shop with each other. Soooo, I found her a lovely scarf at Forever21, purple leather belt and grey poka dot tights from the wonderful ModCloth, and she loooved it.

She's like 5'2" and I'm like 5'5. And I'm the shortest kid in the family. I always like to tell people that. It makes me feel better about myself.
We didn't want to hog the camera so we let Rilee in. She's my baby girl. (big baby girl)

And then Rilee and I tried some poses. Why is it that when the camer is off, you can come up with the silliest faces. But when the camera is on? "Uhhhhh, what should we do Rilee?"

oh and that little guy? He's the REAL baby in the family. He. is. a little. nut.

But really, my mom, I think, is probably the most patient, loving, FORGIVING, nurturing person I have in my life. She has praised the uppps, and lended an ear when I've been down. She has helped me clean my house when I was so busy I just couldn't and wouldn't do it. I She is proud of me and what I have accomplished, she has offered sound advice when I've needed it. And you know what? She doesn't tell me what to do. She just listens. I really like that.

A World of Wishes Awaits....

I came upon these hidden little treasures from long ago. Well, maybe just 2 years ago during the Hiatis (I'm too far away from spell check. Sorry) of Miss Ruby Sue. I mean we're talking 60 orders A DAY! So I hired some great little elves and I taught them to rip, roll, sew and glue.

And these guys were free. (the kids)
Actually it cost me a few Dairy Queens when they were done. Complaining.

If you've ever touched Dupioni silk it is beautiful, and when you rip it, it has a glorious rrrriiiiiiiIIIIIPPPPPPP sound effect. I used to make my kids rip yards and yards of this stuff to help me be quicker at my orders. And it did help. But now, I leave it unripped and folded where I can see it all pretty.
I have been so very, very blessed. I never realized that my little dream of being 'something' would really come true. NOw don't take me wrong here- I'm a V.I.P. at home, but I wondered if I could make it out there on my creativity alone and have someone pay for my services. Guess what?
Hard work, Prayer and a little bit of fabric go along way!
For anyone one of my great clients, friends or followers, YOU CAN DO IT! You can tap into your talents. If you're going to make something, make it bigger, better than anyone elses. I love it when someone says 'What is that?"....
Don't give up on yourself. Believe me. I'd have my days. But you just keep going.

I'll be traveling with Mr. Ruby Sue to Washington and I will be filmed on how I create a vintage wedding, along with hairpieces for the flower girls, bridesmaids, guests, and lastly the Bridal Piece. SQueEL!!!!

I'm trying really hard to not get a big head. After all, it's a big deal and I've got work to do. In the meantime, I'll keep you all posted on the dates, details, and the final product. And you will be thrilled to hear that it's going to be on YouTube, and the finished products will be photographed and sold in my Etsy shop.

Around the world and back again

You guys must be so SICK of me coloring my hair. But, I think I've tried everything (hightlited, chocolate, red, extensions, platinum, platinum with pink, dark with purple. I know)

(Jumping in the air is really harder than it looks-
and I did it in my RED Anthropologie heels)

and I'm ready to go something a little more me. Actually, I don't know what is me anymore.

I know that my roots are a light brown, but as far as ME goes, I'm not the same person I was 3 years ago when I started this journey of traveling to places I didn't think was possible.

Being brave enough to try out for a broadway play. In my 30's.

Playing the role of Potifers Wife and LOVING it.

Starting a business. Boy did that rock.

Becoming humble when it tanked.

Being greatful when it resurrected.

Learning I don't have to prove anything.

Just be me.

Because I am enough.

That doesn't really come in a certain color. I think I'll embrace my natural color. But with a streak of something fabulous to the side. Can't just be one. And that's ok.

A new Up-do in Blue

I felt that feeling. The 5 year itch.
You know the one that says, I'm tired of the same old look. I think I need a change. And i've really fell in love with that blue that's sooo blue I call it 'China' blue. You know you're moms old dishes that had a funky blue scene printed on top of the white correll dish? Ya that one- it sooo reminds me of my mom. I like that.

So I found this fabric at my fabric store- HOUSE OF FABRICS in Idaho Falls. It's amazing. I always come home with something. I bought 5 yards, folded it in half into 2.5 yards, cut it on the fold, then folded those 2.5 yards longside and cut (actually ripped it- cause I like the sound of it ripping) and then made a fold at the top, sewed that and slid the curtain rod in, pushing it as close to the ceiling as I could. I asked hubby for an entire WEEK if he'd hang the curtains and he kept putting me off. You know how that is. then I told him we could do it naked......and his eyes got really big and he said, "what about the kids" . He didn't know I was kidding. But that idea really works. At least it got his attention.
I don't finish the edges. I leave them raw. I know, lazy is the new cool and I like the tattered edges. It tones down the formal look of 'drapes' . (I don't like that word. It reminds me of 'slacks') shiver....

I then began the hunt for a few pillow accents. I love the hunt. I love hunting for patterns and texture.
I found the CHEVRON pillows at this great Etsy store FestiveHomeDecor
Then I found a great knit pillow, and a furry white puff ball pillow at Pier 1. The others are from my daughters room that happened to be in the same blue that I needed. (That was cheep)

Over all, I love the room. I love chevron with floral, cream knits with fur, satin with polyester. And that's how I dress, and design. Polar opposites make great companions....like hubby and me, .....like beauty and the beast, like peanut butter and saltine crackers.......like sweet and sour.

Have you ever found a friend that just can practically read your creative little mind and turn an idea into something magical? I did.

I met Tammy at a Dave Ramsey (the guy who tells you how to get out of debt. He told me. and I listened. And then I didn't) class in the early 2010 year and since then, she has helped me create Miss Ruby Sue kits, a brand new Banner, and something you can't see. (or buy) She gave me courage and inspired me to KEEP GOING. And dangit, I'm good enough too. Because when you haven't made a sale in a week, (or two) and you feel like the world has forgotten you, Tammy just makes me feel better about myself. She's funny, relaxed and UBER talented. And she drinks diet Coke too.

She owns Green Grass Stamps and designs then all by her little self on that big Mac screen. (so. jelous.)

She also took some pictures of me because she really liked me hair. (I know. It looks great doesn't it? Like a pixie. Like a fairy pixie. something like that.)

She bought a NEW camera (sooo. jelous) and tweeked them and WaLaah. Beautiful.

I drop off a present, I get pictures. I'm liking this arrangement!

I look better when I don't give a big ol' smile. It shows my double chin of skin.

Do any of you have a favorite neighbor? I sure do! Meet Parker, a funny little blonde 6 years old who plays with my little guy. He comes into my Miss Ruby Sue studio and begs me to make hairpieces for his big sister Lauren. He's very thoughtful, smart, and adorable. My 15 year old Kimball even likes playing with him.
Wow!

There weren't any children waiting in line to sit on this guys lap so I took a second to whisper in his ear. I'd highly encourage any 37 year old to try it. What did I ask for? I asked for a million bucks. I've been asking that since I was 16, and I still haven't gotten it. I must still be really naughty after all these years. Not much has changed has it?

But I can still look at it. And believe me, that's about all you need to do with these cakes, because they're so pretty who would dare to take a knife to this eye candy!
I met Collen Peck, owner of counterfitcakes. I was walking down the isles of hairbows, clothing, toys and tutu skirts when I saw these amazing cakes under beautifully displayed under lights and glass. I wasn't sure if they were real, but she explained they were made of fondant. Can you believe that- AND- you put them on your counter just to look at!
Now that's a fat free, gluten free, sodium free, flourless, sugar free cake!

Colleen was so nice- she said I looked famous! Ha! Imagine that?

So I was telling you about all the neat sellers at OH SWEET SADIE!.
r house couture I just have to brag about.
I had seen this picture on their blog and was having a paticular hard day and thought- "hmph- I need that necklace !" I have said this to myself before, and now I'm going to wear it. Then later after purchasing it, I found out they were right next to me at the boutique--Small world.
After 4 days of manning their booth (ok, and mine too) the 3 of them had some pretty funny stories about the response ladies had wearing my pieces and looking in the mirror. I also had a chance to talk to them and found out they really love their work, and their clients love them.

OH SWEET SADIE

Many of you, my sweet friends, knew I was headed to Utah's DAYBREAK new shopping district on SoDa Row. And ladies, I'm sorry to say but Rexburg wouldn't know what to do with all the fantastic artisians, crafters and creative women. Now I know, we have a lot of great women here. But I'm not talking about crocheted pot holders. But before I show you the other fabulous retailers, (that will be coming soon)I'll talk about Miss Ruby Sue first. Thanks to Cassie who lent me the bird cage, mirror and night stand, Natalie for the chandelier (you did have a few offers on the light!) . I set up Tuesday night, drove home, then came back saturday. (Yes, I was tired from sitting on my but four hours, however I read Glen Becks "Overton Window" down and back. Awesome! Reading is such a luxury! )

I call this hairpiece the Big Bird. She was very fun to make. I also threw in a few necklaces. I happen to love the bow tie on pom poms. I guess everyone else liked those too. Towards the end of preparation, I had a headband hangover. Literally. Come on, 125 headbands! Gesh!

SPARK EVENT

Many of you know I attended the fabulous SPARK event in Lindon Utah.

I had never heard of Lindon, but it's a little bedroom, or rather armpit community of American Fork. I was prepared for the event, but blown away at how beautiful and organized the whole event was. I mean, there was bikes, paper, chandeliers hanging from a rather tall ceiling.
I got to teach mini classes to 200 creative women how I make my fabulous ruffles that only I know how to do- now 200 ladies know my secret!
Thanks to Lizzy Kartchner, Margie Romney, and Rhonna Farrer for the invitation. I hope I get to come back next year. And my new friend Jefra Star who shot these amazing pics- It was sooo fun you guys! I wish I lived closer! you've gotta take a second to check these girls out-

I've been so stinkin late, delayed, whatever you call it. Recently I was in my Picassa uploading photos to be developed (don't do Walgreens. Do Sams) and I realized what a great job my photographers have done interpreting my work.

Here's a few by Cassie and Tasha. I've known them for about a year, and I have been so lucky to work with both of them. They love what they do and they are sooo cute! Most of the time they call and ask me to make something custom for their photo shoots. THAT is my favorite!

aaahhh, yes, it's me. And No I'm NOT crazy. I just think hair is, well, fun to play with, and,.....

replaceable, and ahhhh....... temporary. As you can tell, I don't reallly care what hair-do or color I have. I'm not attached to it. ObViously.

Tami at Tami's salon in Rexburg, cut about 10 inches off, and I couldn't have been more happy to see it heaped on the floor- and did you know that your cut hair is shipped over to help absorb the oil spill..... yes, really. I think it's kind of gross myself.

I asked for a sleek, Vogue look that I could turn soft, or sassy, spiked or mohawk, and boy did she deliver.

and i LOOOVE it.

Chelsey's Wedding Day

This piece turned out just gorgeous for Miss Chelsey. She picked the look from an editorial shot in one of my wedding booklet and I duplicated that exact look with beautiful chiffon petals hand cut from my own mothers wedding veil used on Jan. 3, 1973.

I told Chelsey I was passing on a beautiful love story from one woman to another.

Nothing like a sweet 8 year to decorate for her baptism.
This special piece featured:

Vintage Millinery White Flower Spray with Pearls from the 1940's. I mixed these little organza flowers with modern chiffon rosettes which really made the velvet leaves go 'my-oh-my'
Each little piece is very special and has a story to tell. I hope 20 years from now Regi can show her own little girls the beautiful dress and delicate hairpiece she wore on her special day. The dress may not fit her daughters, but a hairpiece will always be a time travelers best friend.

Here we have the lovely Jen Springer modeling one of Miss Ruby Sue's latest Vogue Classics.

I have to confess.....Jen supplied the Burbury/Ralph Lauren Plaid, and I supplied the POW!

Jen was really great to work with and knew exactly what she wanted- she even drew her little boys bowties for me to duplicate.

These boys are so well behaved and adorable-
